Waxing Crescent is my current longform WIP about giant robots and the (mostly) people who pilot them. Set in a near-future world plagued by attacks from giant alien viruses known as Violuses, mech pilots not only form the first line of defense and rescue squads, but have now become integral to construction, military efforts and most other industries.
Meet the cast below…
Isolde Kelly
Age: 27
Birthday: December 13th
Occupation: Pilot of the Waxing Crescent
Bio: You wouldn’t know that the fate of the world is on her shoulders to look at her. Isolde is a carefree and capricious soul, a big fan of good natured teasing and pranks, and seemingly chronically incapable of taking anything seriously. When she isn’t fighting space monsters in her giant robot, you can find her watching movies with her fiancé Stan, sewing clothes or skipping stones at the lake.
Marsha Aguilar
Age: 21
Birthday: March 22nd
Occupation: Pilot of the Rising Star
Bio: Isolde’s younger cousin is significantly more dour. Marsha is level-headed and responsible, and can come off as cold or even stuck-up. She’s the one you turn to when you need a difficult choice made – maybe not the one you turn to for a wild night out. You’ll never find a more dedicated pilot, or one who spends more hours running simulations.
Stan Jin
Age: 25
Birthday: February 16th
Occupation: Mechanic of the Waxing Crescent
Bio: In the kindest way possible, Stan initially comes off as a total asshole. Get to know him and he still comes off an asshole, but at the very least as one who’s got a mostly healthy obsession with his fiancée. His other obsession with machinery is probably the only thing that stopped him from becoming a Devil Wears Prada style fashion mogul.
Sirana Panya
Age: 24
Birthday: July 25th
Occupation: Mechanic of the Rising Star
Bio: Professional mechanic and professional rage-baiter, when Sirana isn’t showing her love for her friends by being the most intrusive pain-in-the-ass possible, you can find her coming up with dance routines to a twelve-minute song you’ll never remember the name of. Believe it or not, she and Stan are childhood friends.
Salem Griffith
Age: 25
Birthday: April 13th
Occupation: Mechanic of the Burning Blue
Bio: Isolde’s best friend occasionally comes off as unfriendly. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Salem fills whatever time she has outside of working on the Burning Blue at homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and attempting to unionize her workplace. The fact she hasn’t been forced out by her employers is a testament to her skill.
Lorelai Vargas
Age: 28
Birthday: June 2nd
Occupation: Mechanic of Cherry Cherry
Bio: One half of the indie duo Cherry Cherry, Lorelai is… maybe not the pinnacle of common sense. Though you’d think she were next to her partner Stephanie. Her heart’s in the right place, even if her mind usually isn’t.
